Cardano Foundation Joins Swiss CMTA: What the Tokenized Shares Deal Does and Doesn’t Mean
Cardano Foundation has joined Swiss group CMTA. Here’s what the CIP-0113 recognition for tokenized shares covers, and what it doesn’t.

The Cardano Foundation has joined the Capital Markets and Technology Association (CMTA), a Swiss industry group that develops standards for issuing securities on blockchains. The Foundation announced the membership on 29 October 2026.
How we got here
On 7 October, the Foundation launched a new token standard, CIP-0113, on Cardano’s mainnet at the TOKEN2049 conference. It lets issuers build rules directly into a token, such as identity checks, sanctions screening, transfer limits, freezes, and forced transfers. It needed no hard fork, and ADA and existing tokens are not affected. The rules apply only to assets issued with the new framework.
The Cardano Foundation is now a member of CMTA.Following the launch of CIP-0113, CMTA recognized it as equivalent to the CMTAT, meaning issuers can use it to tokenize certifiable shares.Together, we will work to advance standards for tokenized capital markets. https://t.co/SQ00NCFXiq

The same day, CMTA’s Expert Committee recognized CIP-0113 tokens as equivalent to its own smart contract standard, CMTAT, because they include its mandatory functions.
What the recognition means
Companies can now issue ledger-based shares on Cardano using a contract that CMTA accepts for its Tokenized Shares certification scheme. For issuers, that widens the choice of blockchains under a scheme that is not tied to one network.
What it doesn’t mean
- It certifies no company. Each issuer still has to meet Swiss legal and technical requirements.
- It covers shares only. Reports say tokenized debt and the underlying Cardano network are excluded.
- It isn’t a verdict on ADA. The decision concerns a technical standard, not the coin’s value or safety.
The Foundation’s spun-out digital identity company, Veridian, has reportedly used CIP-0113 to tokenize its own shares. It has not been confirmed that Veridian holds CMTA certification.
Why it matters for Europe
Switzerland is outside the EU, but it is one of Europe’s main financial centres. Its standards-based approach, where compliance rules live inside the token itself, is a useful reference point for anyone following tokenized securities in the region.
What to watch
Whether a company other than Veridian issues CMTA-certified shares on Cardano, and how rival networks respond.
