Binance vs Coinbase is the first comparison most new crypto buyers run, and in 2026 the answer depends more on where you live than on any feature list. Binance is cheaper on paper and lists more coins, but its main platform is closed to US users. Coinbase costs more per trade and is easier to use and more tightly regulated in the US. This guide compares the two on fees, safety, availability and features, and adds Kraken and Bybit for readers who want the wider field. Fees were checked on November 4, 2026.

Binance vs Coinbase: the quick answer

  • If you live in the US: you cannot use Binance.com. Your choices are Coinbase, Kraken or Binance.US, which is a separate, smaller platform.
  • Lowest fees: Binance.US charges 0% maker and 0.02% taker. Binance.com charges 0.10%. Coinbase Advanced starts at 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker for new US accounts.
  • Easiest for beginners: Coinbase, as long as you move from its simple app to Coinbase Advanced to avoid spreads.
  • Most coins and products outside the US: Binance, with Bybit as an alternative for derivatives.

Binance vs Coinbase fees

Fees are where the two differ most, and they depend on which screen you use. Both exchanges have a simple buy button and a pro-style order book, and the order book is cheaper.

Binance.com charges regular users 0.10% for both makers and takers on spot trades. Paying fees in its BNB token cuts that by 25%, to 0.075%, and higher volume lowers it further through VIP tiers. Binance.US cut its spot fees to 0% maker and 0.02% taker for every user in April 2026, with no volume tiers.

Coinbase has two pricing models. The simple app quotes a price that includes a spread, and a limit order there carries a 1% fee. Coinbase Advanced charges maker and taker fees with no spread. Recent fee guides put the US entry tier at 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker after Coinbase restructured its tiers on September 16, 2026. The first discount tier now starts at $10,000 of 30-day volume. Rates in other regions differ. Coinbase One subscriptions, from $4.99 a month, remove fees on simple trades up to a monthly cap, but they do not change Advanced pricing.

Bar chart of the fee on a $1,000 trade: Binance.US $0.20, Binance $1, Bybit $1, Kraken Pro $8, Coinbase $9

On a $1,000 market order at entry-level rates, that works out to about $1 on Binance.com ($0.75 with BNB), $0.20 on Binance.US and $9 on Coinbase Advanced. A resting limit order that qualifies as a maker costs $5 on Coinbase Advanced and nothing on Binance.US. For a small account the gap is real, and it compounds if you trade often. If you buy once or twice a year, the difference matters less than ease of use and safety.

Binance vs Coinbase Pro: which is better now?

Coinbase Pro no longer exists as a separate product. Its tools were folded into Coinbase Advanced, which is the Coinbase side of any comparison with Binance’s trading platform today. The pricing model is the same idea as the old Pro: maker and taker fees that fall as your 30-day volume rises. So the real question is Binance against Coinbase Advanced, and on fees alone Binance is lower at every entry tier. Coinbase Advanced’s case rests on US regulation, a simpler design and the option to switch between simple and advanced views in one account.

Binance vs Coinbase vs Kraken vs Bybit in 2026

ExchangeEntry spot fee (maker / taker)Open to US users?Best for
Binance.com0.10% / 0.10% (0.075% with BNB)NoLow fees, many coins, futures
Binance.US0% / 0.02%Yes, in supported statesCheap US spot trading
Coinbase Advanced0.50% / 0.90% (US entry tier)YesBeginners, US regulation
Kraken Pro0.40% / 0.80%YesMore coins, staking, reserve proofs
Bybit0.10% / 0.10%NoDerivatives, non-US traders

Kraken is the one that has moved most this year. On July 9, 2026 it raised its Pro entry tier from 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker to 0.40% and 0.80%, though holding about $20,000 on the platform now qualifies you for lower rates without trading. Kraken says it supports more than 600 cryptocurrencies, against roughly 250 to 300 on Coinbase in reviews, and its own comparison page argues that it publishes reserve proofs Coinbase does not. Treat that as Kraken’s view of a rival. Bybit matches Binance’s 0.10% spot fee, has strong derivatives, and is restricted in the US, UK and Canada.

Which exchange is safest?

No large exchange has a clean record, so look at what happened and how each one responded.

Binance suffered the largest theft in its history on October 29, 2026, about $6.3 billion. Binance says customers will not bear the loss and that it has replaced 98% of the affected assets, a claim we examined in our report on what the 98% figure does and does not cover. The FBI has attributed the attack to North Korea, which denies it. Withdrawals were frozen for more than two days before they reopened. Binance’s published reserve proof covers ten assets, not everything it lists.

Coinbase disclosed in a May 2025 filing that overseas support staff had been bribed to leak customer data. Reviews put the number of affected customers at about 69,000 and say no funds or private keys were taken. Coinbase is listed on Nasdaq and is regulated in the US, and reviews say USD balances are covered by FDIC insurance up to $250,000, though crypto itself is not. Kraken says no wallet it manages has been breached since 2011. That is its own claim, not an independent audit. Bybit lost about $1.5 billion in Ether in a February 2025 hack.

The practical lesson holds for all of them: keep only what you plan to trade on an exchange, turn on two-factor authentication, and move long-term holdings to your own wallet.

Coinbase vs Binance: which is better in 2026?

There is no single winner, because the two serve different people.

  • Choose Coinbase if you are in the US, want a simple app with US regulation behind it, and accept paying more per trade.
  • Choose Binance.com if you are outside the US and want low fees, a large coin list and futures. Weigh the October hack and the partial reserve proof first.
  • Choose Binance.US if you want the cheapest US spot fees and can live with a shorter asset list, no derivatives and patchy state availability.
  • Choose Kraken if you want more coins than Coinbase and staking, and you will use Kraken Pro or hold enough to reach a lower tier.

FAQ

Is Binance cheaper than Coinbase?

Yes, at entry level. Binance charges 0.10% per spot trade, and Binance.US charges 0% maker and 0.02% taker. Coinbase Advanced starts at 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker for new US accounts, and its simple app adds a spread.

Can US residents use Binance?

Not the global platform. US residents can use Binance.US, a separate company with spot trading and basic staking, a shorter asset list and no derivatives. It is not open in every state.

Is Coinbase Pro still available?

No. Coinbase Advanced replaced it and carries the same maker and taker fee model.

Which is safer, Binance or Coinbase?

Coinbase is a US-listed, US-regulated company whose 2025 breach exposed customer data but not funds. Binance had a record theft in October 2026 and says it has covered customer losses. Neither is risk-free, and the safest habit is to self-custody what you do not trade.

Which exchange is best overall: Coinbase, Kraken or Binance?

It depends on your country and how often you trade. For most US beginners the shortlist is Coinbase and Kraken. For fee-sensitive traders outside the US, Binance is the usual pick.
